Still Life

 Still life task

We spent this afternoon doing still life.

This first image was done in 45mins and I aimed to capture exactly what I saw before me. I didn't do a warm up which I should have done as my drawing speed is not that good. I should get a lot more down in 45mins. I think the mannequin is fairly true to real life but everything else is not very accurate. Speed was the key here to successfully completing this task but it was good to see for a comparison.

This second task was my style, which I wasn't sure what my style was. As I began to draw this is what came out and it really got me thinking that actually I do have a style, my style is sort of hard to explain though. I love using quick mediums like charcoal, I love using two tones and focusing on light and shadow and most importantly I love contrast. This task actually really built my confidence in my own style as before I didn't think I had any kind of personal touch.

This is part of the same task, since my style of working is quite fast I had time to do several in the same amount of time as the first still life and these are far better too, which is strange. I like this drawing ive done, again ive focussed on light, shadow and contrast. This isn't really deliberate though, its how I naturally work, I hardly thought about it but I personally really like it.
This is the third and final one I got done in this 45mins. I like this one for the same reasons as the other two but its a shame how wonky the bowl is at the bottom. Its all a learning experience though and I feel ive still taken something fairly mundane and created my own spin on it. I'd say this session was a real success.
Collage.... This task was about collage which to be honest is one of my least favourite ways of working. It doesn't really make sense to me and I struggle to see the appeal however I did give it a go. This first one I did I used book paper and layered on top. Molly said this wasn't very inventive, which to be fair she has a point but I do personally like this outcome. But I need to remember that this task isn't about outcome its about learning, and I think that's where I went wrong.

Second collage.... Ok this one went a bit south as you can see, but my main idea with this was trying to find the core shapes with the collage. I didn't like this task to be honest and maybe didn't get as much out of it as I could have. I do like the weird absurd collage a bit more but its not really what we were asked to do. I think I need to stop being stubborn and try to revisit collage and make the most out of it as a medium.
Final task. This final task we were asked to try to create a scene using what we could remember from the still lifes we did today. We could go for trying to recreate a scene exactly or just try to get as many objects in as we could remember. I worked in my quick loose way and got quite a few objects down but not in the correct placement for the most part, although I wasn't going for that so much.
